Seeding Blackland Clay, One Yard at a Time

Elite Hydroseeding Dallas sprays seed, mulch and fertilizer slurry on new lawns, builder lots, commercial pads, slopes and drainage channels across Dallas and the surrounding suburbs. We also set silt fence and inlet protection, lay erosion control blankets, fine grade and spread topsoil, and overseed tired or storm-damaged yards.

The ground here decides most of what we do. Dallas sits on the Texas Blackland Prairies, named for dark, alkaline clay that shrinks and swells with moisture and opens deep cracks in dry weather. The state soil, Houston Black, is one of those expansive clays. South of the Trinity River the White Rock Escarpment lifts the land as much as 230 feet, so slopes in Oak Cliff and the cities beside it behave differently from the flat lots up north. Rain tends to come in bursts: May and October are the wettest months in the 1991-2020 normals, while July and August are the hottest and driest. Seed that goes down at the wrong time, or on clay that was worked while sticky, struggles all summer.

How we work

  • We walk the site first and look at slope, drainage, sun, access and what is already growing
  • The quote breaks out soil prep, seed, mulch, blankets or silt fence so you can compare it line by line
  • We pick the seed for the season: warm-season grass like Bermuda when soil is warm, and a frank talk about waiting when it is not
  • Clay gets graded when it is workable, not when it is smearing under the tires
  • On builder and commercial jobs we place silt fence and inlet protection where the site's stormwater plan calls for them
  • You get written watering and mowing instructions before we leave
