Seeding a City With Two Kinds of Ground

Hydroseeding in Dallas looks simple on a map, because most of the city is flat and sits between 450 and 550 feet above sea level. The exception is the western edge of the Austin Chalk, the limestone rise people call the White Rock Escarpment. It climbs about 230 feet and runs north to south through Dallas County, and south of the Trinity River it is plain to see in Oak Cliff. Those two settings call for different seed mixes, different mulch rates and different erosion control.

Flat clay lots

On the flat parts of the city, the trouble is water that sits rather than water that runs. Heavy clay takes rain slowly, so we fine grade each yard to a steady fall away from the slab before any slurry goes down. A new lawn installation on a level lot mostly comes down to getting that grade right and spreading enough topsoil for roots to get started.

Oak Cliff and other slopes

Where the escarpment shows up, a standard hydromulch can wash before the grass roots. On steeper banks we step up to a bonded fiber matrix or pin erosion control blankets on the face, then spray seed over or through them. Toe-of-slope silt fence keeps soil off the street until the cover fills in.

Near the Trinity

The river runs between earthen levees about 50 feet tall, and land near it is floodplain. Work there tends to be commercial and public ground where sediment control and inlet protection go in before grading starts, and the seeding plan has to hold up if water comes over it.

Picking the month

Dallas normals put the wettest months in May and October, with July and August the driest and hottest. We like to seed warm-season grass from late spring into early summer and use fall for repairs and overseeding, so new turf gets rain on its side instead of fighting the August heat.

Dallas Ground and Weather

  • White Rock Escarpment. The western edge of the Austin Chalk rises about 230 feet and runs north to south through Dallas County, most visible south of the Trinity in Oak Cliff.
  • Elevation. Most of Dallas is flat, lying between roughly 450 and 550 feet above sea level.
  • Trinity levees. The Trinity River is flanked on both sides by earthen levees about 50 feet tall that protect the city from floods.
  • Rain peaks. Love Field normals show about 4.57 inches of rain in May and 4.79 inches in October, against about 2.3 inches in August.
  • Cedar Ridge Preserve. The 633-acre preserve inside city limits sits at an elevation of about 755 feet above sea level.

Dallas Questions

Does the escarpment change how a Dallas lawn should be seeded?

Yes. Flat lots need grading for drainage, while escarpment slopes need heavier mulch, blankets or BFM to hold the seed in place while it roots.

When does seed get the most help from Dallas rain?

May and October are the wettest months on average. Late spring seeding catches the first peak; fall is our window for repairs and overseeding.

Can you seed ground near the Trinity River levees?

We can seed floodplain and public ground, but erosion control and sediment control go in first, and the mix is chosen to survive high water.

Is hydroseeding cheaper than sod for a big Dallas lot?

Usually, especially on larger areas. The trade-off is time: sod looks finished on day one, while a hydroseed lawn needs several weeks of watering to fill in.

Do you work on new construction in Dallas?

Yes. Builders call us for final grade, topsoil, silt fence and seeding so lots can close out with stable ground.
