Lawns on Former Prairie Farms
Hydroseeding in Mesquite works on land with a long farming past. Before settlers arrived, Mesquite was open prairie and a trading ground where the Caddo farmed. The town was founded in 1873 on the Texas and Pacific Railway and named after Mesquite Creek. It stayed a farming community, growing cotton, hay, corn and sugarbeets, until the suburban boom after World War II.
Postwar yards
Much of Mesquite was built in the decades after the war, so many lawns are now old. Common problems are compacted soil, poor drainage near the foundation and turf that thinned during dry summers. A renovation with regrading, topsoil and hydroseed gives a fresh start; thin lawns with a good base can be overseeded.
Mesquite Creek and drainage
Mesquite Creek and other channels carry water through the city toward the East Fork of the Trinity. Lots that back onto drainage ways need steady cover on the banks. We use blankets on steep spots and silt fence during any regrading.
Trees
Mesquite has been a Tree City USA for more than 25 years. Mature street and yard trees mean shade, roots and competition for water. Seed mixes and watering plans should account for them.
Ranch ground
The Florence Ranch Homestead, started in 1871, grew from 207.5 acres to 730 acres by 1892. Today the home sits on 4 acres of park land, a reminder of how much open ground the city once had.

Mesquite Questions
My Mesquite lawn is older than I am. Renovate or overseed?
If the turf is mostly gone or the yard drains poorly, renovate. If it is just thin, overseeding may be enough.
How do mature trees affect seeding in Mesquite?
Shade and root competition thin grass. We adjust the seed mix and watering plan for shaded areas.
My yard backs onto a drainage channel. Can you stabilize it?
Yes, with erosion control blankets and seed on the bank, plus silt fence during any grading.
Is the soil in Mesquite good for grass?
It was farm ground, so it can be good, but decades of foot traffic and construction compact it. Loosening and topsoil help.
