Grass on Ellis County Clay
Hydroseeding in Waxahachie starts with Ellis County soil. Ellis is one of the counties that once held all or mostly blackland prairie, the dark alkaline clay that made this part of Texas a leading cotton region. By the end of the 1800s nearly all of that prairie had been plowed, often right to the creek banks. Today that same clay is under new subdivisions and older in-town lots alike.
Shrinking and swelling
Blackland soils have vertisol properties: they shrink and swell with moisture, and deep cracks open in dry weather. A new lawn on that clay needs a well-prepared surface, good topsoil and steady water through its first summer so the soil does not pull away from young roots.
Old town and new ground
Waxahachie was founded in 1850 as the Ellis County seat and has many Victorian and Gingerbread-style homes. Older yards around downtown often have mature trees, settled grades and thin turf; we usually renovate those with regrading and hydroseed or overseed. Newer subdivisions outside the core need full lawn installation and builder-side erosion control.
A long tunnel and a lot of dirt
In 1988 the Waxahachie area was picked for the Superconducting Super Collider. Seventeen shafts were sunk and 14.6 miles of tunnel bored before Congress canceled the project in 1993. Large dirt projects in the county since then still follow the same rule: disturbed ground needs silt fence and cover before rain.
Creeks and the lake
The city's name may come from a Muscogee word for cow and creek. Lake Waxahachie offers camping and fishing, and lots that drain toward creeks or the lake need sediment control during grading.

Waxahachie Questions
Why does my Waxahachie yard crack every summer?
Ellis County blackland clay shrinks as it dries. Topsoil, good grass cover and steady watering reduce the cracking.
Can you renovate an older lawn near downtown Waxahachie?
Yes. We regrade settled areas, add topsoil and hydroseed or overseed under and around mature trees.
Do new Waxahachie subdivisions need erosion control?
Yes. Silt fence and inlet protection keep clay out of streets and creeks until lawns are established.
Is hydroseeding cheaper than sod in Waxahachie?
On most yards it costs less than sod. It takes a few weeks longer to look finished.
